COLUMBUS, Ohio—St. Vincent-St. Mary senior Kya Epps left quite a mark in her last competition as a high school athlete.
Prior to competing at Walsh University, Epps set two records Saturday at the 2022 OHSAA Division II Track and Field Meet at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
Epps broke state records in the 100 meters (11.57 seconds) and 200 (23.81).
“It’s just amazing. I didn’t think I could do it. But it happened and I’m just impressed,” Epps said.
Both of Epps’ records were set in 2018 by Beachwood’s Mia Knight.
Epps was the top seed in the 100 heading into Saturday’s final, clocking 11.55 thanks to the wind in the preliminaries. She beat Dayton Chaminade Julienne’s Jadyn Haywood by 0.18 seconds for her first individual state championship. Knight’s record was 11.65 seconds.
Epps had won a championship in 2021 with the STVM 4×200-meter relay team. So she knew what it was like to be at the top of the podium and wanted to do it again.
“It just made me a little hungrier. So I had to come get it,” Epps said.
An hour and a half later, Epps returned for the 200m, where she was the second seed after Friday’s preliminaries. Epps came into the final corner ahead of the pack and raised her arms in celebration as she crossed the finish line, breaking Knight’s record in the 200m (23.96).
“It was a lot (of emotion). I started crying at the end,” Epps said. “It was just a lot for me.”
Epps also raced in the 4×200 on Saturday, which finished fifth.
