Vaqueros win two medals and program records on day one of WAC Indoor Athletics Championships

ALBUQUERQUE – Graduate student Aviana Goode and freshman Michael Campbell both earned silver medals for the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women’s and men’s Vaqueros track and field teams on day one of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) indoor championships on Friday at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

Goode took second place in the women’s long jump with a mark of 6.00 meters, which is tied for third in program history. Campbell won a silver medal in the men’s shot put, posting a personal best of 17.14 meters – the fifth-best mark in program history.

Goode also broke her own program record in the 60-meter hurdles, running 8.68 in the preliminaries to advance to the final.

First-year student Jermarion Stewart broke a new personal best in the men’s 60-metre preliminaries, running a 6.83 to win his heat by a hair and advance to the finals. Stewart’s time is the best in program history. He also clocked the fifth-best time in program history in the 200-meter final with a 21.82, but did not advance to the final.

Second year Miguel Escamilla closed his heat in the men’s 800 meters incredibly strong, going from third place to winning the race and advancing to the final as the top qualifier. He ran in 1:53.39, which is a personal best and the fifth best time in program history.

Second year in red shirt Yashawn Hamilton also entered the history books in the men’s 60 meters at No. 3 with a personal best 6.90, but did not qualify for the final. Second year Uxia Pereira had a strong run in the women’s 60-meter hurdles, posting a personal best and fifth fastest time in program history with an 8.81, but she did not finish in the top eight to qualify.

Junior red shirt Alexandrea Hurst finished fourth in the women’s shot put with a throw of 14.76 metres.

Freshman at the Mission Veterans Memorial Alex Galvan started his heptathlon journey strong, finishing Day 1 in fifth place with 2,803 points after four events. Galvan’s efforts were highlighted with a second place finish in the shot put with a personal best 13.39 metres.

The UTRGV women’s team had eight personal bests on Friday, while the men’s team notched 10. The Vaqueros will wrap up the WAC Indoor Championships on Saturday, starting with the combined events at 10 a.m., events on the field at 11 a.m. and the race events at 3:30 p.m.
