Stax Records veteran David Porter has announced a new album project featuring some of his previously unreleased songs performed by a group of veteran musicians and young singers.
The acclaimed songwriter and producer will release the 10-track LP titled “Chapter 1…Back in the Day” on September 23 through his Made in Memphis Entertainment label.
A member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame, Porter is best known for his Stax-era work, his partnership with Isaac Hayes, and a string of classic songs for Otis Redding, Johnnie Taylor, The Emotions, The Soul Children, Carla Thomas, and Sam & Dave. More recently, Porter’s past work has been sampled in hits by Mariah Carey, Will Smith, The Notorious BIG, Jay-Z and Wu-Tang Clan, among others.
“Chapter 1…Back in the Day” features 10 previously unreleased songs from Porter’s catalog performed by young singers Brandon Wattz, Candise Marshall and Marcus Scott. The tracks feature musical backing from Stax and Hi Records session aces Lester Snell (keyboard, electric organ), Willie Hall (drums, percussion), Winston Stewart (keyboard, keyboard strings), and Michael Toles (guitar).

The album was recorded and mixed at 4U Recording Studios in Memphis and Atlanta, both part of Porter’s Made in Memphis Entertainment (MIME) company. Additional production was done by Garry Goin, with the album recorded by Tyler Battles and mixed by Anthony Smith.
“It was an absolute honor to reunite some of my old band Stax and sit in the production booth as I brought my music to life with the incredible up-and-coming vocalists Brandon Wattz, Candise Marshall and Marcus Scott,” said Porter in a statement announcing the project.
“I’ve been fortunate over the past 50 years to see my songs come to life through new techniques like sampling. Now I’m ready to start the next chapter of my musical journey with “Chapter 1”.
According to MIME’s statement, the record “will launch a series of upcoming album releases featuring new recordings that will draw inspiration from more than 200 demos and songwriting ideas from Porter, none of which have been released or given to another artist since his last solo album in 1973.”
The album is currently available for pre-order on vinyl exclusively through Vinyl Me, Please and will make its way to streaming services and download stores.
In addition to the upcoming release, Porter continues to oversee the development of its various MIME businesses, which include MIME Publishing, synchronization company Heavy Hitters Music, independent music distributors Beatroot Music and Beatroot Africa, and recording studios. 4U.
