DAYTON, Ohio- Marshall University Men’s Soccer Team No. 6 (9-2-3, 3-1-3 Sun Belt) blanked the Wright State Raiders (4-6-4, 4-1-2 Horizon) 1 -0 Wednesday night in Dayton, Ohio.
“Tonight was a game we should have put aside earlier,” said the Herd men’s football head coach Chris Grassi said. “Thanks to our guys, I think we created 2.0 xG in the first five minutes, but there’s the challenge for us, to be more ruthless and more dangerous in those situations. Collectively, I think we’ve done pretty well defended, and as a team, got us around the ball well. We’ve played quite a few attacking teams this season, and I think our guys did well when they got physical and restless. This grass is really dangerous to play on. He’s 11 years old and hard as a rock. There’s hardly any blades of grass left, so every bouncing ball creates chances for them, and I think our defenders have done a good job in overall to handle this. Overall happy to come out of there with the win.”
Marshall went out shooting with a freshman Matthew Bellsecond mohamed seidou and senior Vinicius Fernandes each taking a shot on goal within the first seven minutes of the contest. However, all three attempts were saved by Wright State goaltender Guilherme Pipolo.
Graduate Student Goalie Olivier Semmlé made a big save on a shot from Jacob Adams to keep WSU off the board in the 13th minute.
In the 16th minute, the juniors Adam Aoumaich sent a pass to Bell, who sent a cross and found a slip Joao Souza who scored to put Marshall atop 1-0 with his sixth goal of the season.
senior red shirt Milo Yosef netted a shot on target in the 22nd minute but the attempt was saved as the Herd entered half-time with a 1-0 lead.
Wright State had the lone shot on goal in the second half, but Semmle stopped Reece Allbaugh’s attempt in the 55th minute to record their fourth shutout of the season.
No. 6 Marshall closes out the regular season at Hoops Family Field on Tuesday at 7 p.m. against James Madison.
