Records broken in emphatic series-opening victory at ECU

GREENVILLE, North Carolina – Wichita State opened the weekend series at East Carolina with a resounding 24-1 victory Friday night behind a school-record 10 homers.

Wichita State (29-13, 11-2) entered the weekend needing 10 home runs to tie the season record, set just a season ago, and had 10 in Game 1 from the Serie. The Shockers broke an NCAA record seven in the top of the second inning. The previous NCAA record for home runs in a single inning was five, most recently set by Oklahoma against ECU on March 15, 2015.

Wichita State’s 10 home runs tied the second most in NCAA history.

The Shockers also set school records for runs (24) and hits (23) to lead their winning streak to nine in a row. Wichita State’s last five wins have all gone through the leniency rule.

The nation’s home run and the RBI leader significantly boosted his season totals. Addison Barnard went 4-for-4 with a career-high double, three home runs and seven RBIs. His three home runs tied a school record in a single game and his seven RBI tied for the second most in school history. Barnard now has 29 homers and 74 RBIs this season and 51 career homers.

Barnard extended his consecutive home run streak to six, meaning a home run on Saturday would make it seven, which would tie an NCAA record.

Zoe Jones also tied Barnard’s seven RBI night after hitting a pair of homers, going 3-for-5 at the plate. The NCAA leader in hits would not be outdone. Sydney McKinney went 3-for-4 with a double and four runs, giving him 252 career hits — the most in school history.

Lawrence Lucas, Neleigh Herring, Wylie Glover and Lawrence Mills all multi-hit games added.

erin mcdonald improved to 8-7 in the circle, pitching 3.0 innings to start. Kenzie Schopper finished the game in the circle, pitching 2.0 relief innings. She only allowed one baserunner to walk, while removing another.

Wichita State jumped on ECU on the very first pitch of the game, as McKinney hit a brace down the left field line. In Step Barnard for her first at bat and she delivered her first of three homers. A goal-laden walk for Mills made it 3-0 after the first set.

Round two is when the floodgates opened. Wichita State smashed seven home runs in the frame to go with 12 hits and 13 runs. It’s the second straight game that Wichita State has scored 10 or more goals in a single inning.

Barnard’s second home run, a three-point shot, started the parade of home runs. Two batters later, Jones hit the first of her two home runs in the inning. Herring would go back to back to make it 9-0. Mills, Wool Brown and Glover would then go back to back to back. After McKinney and Barnard reached base, Jones smoked his second of the inning over the left wall to make it 16-0.

In the third, Mills wrapped up his second of the game and Barnard curled a two-point missile down the left field line for the No. 3.

ECU broke the shutout with a solo home run late in the third.

Christine Nelson led the Shockers’ lone run in the fourth on a field single. Jones continued his stellar night with a two-run brace in the fifth and Nelson capped the night with a two-run groundout.

Wichita State and East Carolina continue the weekend series Saturday at 1 p.m. CT.
