Savannah-Chatham County GA Public Schools Have Inventory Errors

A verification of Savannah-Chatham County Public SchoolsThe nutrition inventory process revealed that the school district had a large inventory error and that there was no formal procedure tied to the district’s perpetual inventory process – a system that estimates inventory based on electronic rather than physical records.

According to a seven-page memo detailing the findings of the audit, 24% of items from a follow-up inventory audit at some schools could not be located on site, but were documented in the Edison system, the district cafeteria management system.

The follow-up inventory audit “judgmentally sampled” 355 items across its elementary, K-8, middle and high schools, all of which are largely in the western region of Chatham County.

The audit was carried out between February and June earlier this year. It included a district-wide physical audit and on-site observations of the ordering and receiving processes, according to the memo.

In addition, school and district level nutrition staff who handled ordering, receiving, tracking and inventory procedures were interviewed for the audit.

School board officials will discuss the seven-page memo detailing the findings at its audit committee meeting at 8 a.m. Wednesday. The details of the report also come after the Savannah Morning News did a four-part series on food insecurityaddressing the school district nutritional requirements for students.
