The biggest plane in the world, 124 world records, many titles, only one name; Antonov An-225 | Aviation news

Antonov An-225 ‘Mriya’ caught the world’s attention for being the biggest aircraft in the world. Although it’s hard to believe, aside from its size, the plane is famous for setting 123 other world records before it was destroyed during the Ukraine-Russia war. Even after the destruction, Ukraine did not entirely abandon the Mriya, which means “the dream”. According to reports, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wants to build a second Antonov An-225.

Returning to the subject at hand, the Antonov An-225 has created many records since its inception, not to mention that its existence was unique because only one unit of it was ever built. Speaking of the aircraft’s uniqueness, it had a unique power-generating ability to lift its gigantic body off the ground. Its engine was so powerful it knocked out a fence at RAF Brize Norton in the UK on takeoff last year, reports Simple Flying.

Antonov An-225 world records

Speaking of records, apart from the 124 world records, the aircraft also had 214 national records to its name. Going into detail about some of its most important world records, due to its massive size, the Antonov An-225 held the record for the heaviest maximum takeoff weight. The size also helped the aircraft claim the record for having the largest wingspan at the time.

The Antonov An-225 has always taken things up a notch; following the model, it created the record for carrying the heaviest commercial payload of 253,820 kg. To add perspective, it would be the weight of about sixty-three elephants.

Unsurprisingly, Mriya also created the record for carrying the longest cargo of 42.1m in 2010. In other words, the length of the cargo was almost one and a half times the length of a basketball court.

Even in the era of the epidemic, the An-225 continues to set records. It transported 1,000 cubic meters of crates full of PPE in 2020, the largest shipment volume in history. Loadmasters had to remove pallets and load each crate manually, according to Antonov Airlines, in order to load so many safely.

However, it is not possible to mention all the records created by the Antonov An-225, but it should be mentioned that all the records created by the Mriya were not only about the biggest or heaviest things. It also had other records, such as the Guinness World Record for the highest art exhibition in the world.
